So, today is July 4. You may notice a lack of US flags in my posts today. In fact, I doubt I have any pictures at all with flags from anywhere. Why?
Flags are a symbol of patriotism – and sometimes worse, nationalism – obviously. And I don’t see either of these as being good things. In fact, I find them divisive, destructive.
We are all human beings, everyone on this planet. Cultural and individual differences aside, we are all the same. We have the same basic needs: water, food, shelter. We have the same basic desires: peace, to live in relative comfort, to love and be loved. In this day, too many of these needs and desires are denied as a direct result of patriotism – a patriotism fuelled by power and greed, by those in power. Wars and famine that would not exist were it not for artificial boundaries that were drawn long ago, and which people fight to maintain. Differences used as pretext to launch wars, or to embargo, denying others the right to basic necessities of life.
Nations serve no purpose, other than to allow a tiny group of people to exert their own visions on a much larger group, the citizens of their nation. And in these times, control is already not national, but international, in that it is held not by politicians, but by corporations. Politicians are, for the most part, puppets played by multinational businesses. Wars are lucrative for business, so nations are “urged” to invade other nations, for profit, not for any moral or altruistic reason. And when there is little or no profit to be had, horrific tragedies are ignored (Rwanada comes to mind).
So no, I won’t be making posts to celebrate a “national holiday”. I will not celebrate an event that is more divisive than it is positive. I won’t highlight any nation above any other. We are all human beings. I celebrate that – and the joys and pleasure men can experience when they play together, without inhibitions, expressing their deepest desires, no matter how extreme.
